The former residence of Petar II Petrovic Njegoš was built in 1838 before becoming a memorial museum in 1951 to preserve the revered Njegoš family's heritage. Portraits of notable figures such as Peter the Great, Napoleon and Lord Byron line the walls, a large billiard table dominates one room and there is also a large collection of weapons collected on show. Perhaps the piece de resistance however is the large-scale relief map of Montenegro constructed during World War I by Austrian soldiers, it is now located in Biljarda's garden and takes a minute or so to walk around completely. This is no ordinary map!

Essentially a Royal residence that has been opened up to the public, this building in central Cetinje collates artefacts from various dynasitc residences under one roof, covering political, military and cultural history in one. The traditional costumes, dusty library rooms and elaborate sword displays on the walls all give a fascinating insight into the lives of these past rulers. Well worth a visit when on a cultural jaunt around Cetinje.

Potentially confusing for the first-time visitor, the National Museum is in fact made up of four distinct museums: the Museum of History, an Art Museum that includes the Fado Duric modern art gallery, an Ethnographic Museum and an Archaeological Museum. As you might expect from a national museum, the theme in question here is the material and spiritual history of the territory now known as Montenegro, and the people that have lived there. Everything from war relics to furniture, art works and historical documents are on display here. If you are in Cetinje for the day to explore the country's cultural capital, be sure to set aside part of your time for this worthy museum complex.
