International luxury hotel chains have generally been slow to pick up on Montenegro’s potential as a tourism hub which has resulted in a flourishing rental villa and apartment market as well as a large number of small, independently owned hotels with charm and character. There is something for every budget here but for those in search of a little extra comfort, the best options are to undoubtedly located around the Bay of Kotor and along the Budva Riviera.
The Aman Sveti Stefan was first out of the blocks in what looks to be a luxury hotel renaissance, instantly creating a new design aesthetic with its ‘Montenegrin zen’ interiors. Porto Montenegro’s Regent Hotel & Residences opens in August 2014, giving the Bay of Kotor its first 5-star hotel complete with on-site restaurant, bakery, lounge bar, event spaces and spa centre.
Other world-class investors and operators such as Orascom Development, Qatari Diar, SOCAR and One & Only Resorts are all engaged in luxury projects that will play their part in re-positioning the entire coast from new-kid-on-the-block to established luxury hot-spot over the next five years.
